“because silence is the greatest enemy of fundamental human rights.”
One of the goals of the Turkey Tribunal is to raise awareness on the human rights situation in Turkey.
An ally in obtaining this goal is the press.
Prof. dr. Em. Johan Vande Lanotte has been informing and talking to the National and International press on the innerworkings of the Turkey Tribunal.
Did you know that during the hearings of the Tribunal the designated Rapporteurs (on the different subjects such as torture, press freedom, abductions,…) will present their findings to the Tribunal? Based upon their in-depth research and the following witness statements, the Tribunal will have to pronounce a legal opinion and decide whether or not there have been serious human rights violations in Turkey.
Johan Heymans (partner at Van Steenbrugge Advocaten) is the designated Rapporteur for Abductions and Prof. Dr. Em. Johan Vande Lanotte for Crimes Against Humanity.
If you want to know more, check out www.turkeytribunal.com.
A good Tribunal requires good preparation.
A common practice is that the judges are assisted by a Registry.
Clara Burbano-Herrera (Ghent University), Yasmina El Kaddouri (Van Steenbrugge Advocaten), Esther Theyskens (Van Steenbrugge Advocaten) are the appointed Registrars at The Turkey Tribunal. They have been thoroughly preparing in order to assist the judges as good as possible.
The turkey tribunal will debate whether or not the alleged human rights violation in Turkey amount to a crime against humanity.
The entire session of the Turkey Tribunal will be livestreamed on www.turkeytribunal.com, stay tuned for more updates!
