Human rights

EVERY CASE IS A HUMAN RIGHTS CASE

Fighting for the respect of everyone's fundamental rights is part of VSA's DNA. With a healthy fighting spirit, VSA works tirelessly every day for a more just society. This is always fought for with style, but hard.

This fight starts in the smallest case before a Belgian court in which the right to a fair trial should be safeguarded, and goes as far as litigating before international human rights bodies.

EXPERTISE

Within the firm, considerable expertise has been built up in recent years within human rights. Several proceedings were conducted - successfully - before the European Court of Human Rights, the UN Human Rights Committee,...

VSA falls back on an extensive and diverse network of academics, civil society organisations, politicians,... who provide their special expertise to optimise dossiers in all possible areas.

With these cards in hand, VSA believes it has the extra mile can go into any file.

OUT-OF-THE-BOX THINKING

The fight for human rights anno 2022 requires an innovative and creative approach. VSA distinguishes itself through its unique out-of-the-box approach. Depending on the client's needs and the peculiarities of the issue, VSA always designs a tailor-made solution. In this way, VSA tries to have a positive impact in various ways:
  • Through traditional judicial procedures before national and supranational legal bodies;
  • Through drafting legislative proposals and participating in the legislative process ('public affairs');
In addition, VSA pushes human rights boundaries by establishing small- and large-scale pro bono projects with a social impact. Through the Legal Clinic Human rights helps VSA shape tomorrow's (human rights) lawyers.

Our specialists

"Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home - so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. [...]
Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere.
Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home,
we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world."
